Plans are now underway for the development of a vibrant new shopping, hospitality and commercial precinct at Australia’s most exciting address, Tonsley Village.
Tonsley’s iconic Boiler House is set to take on new life as the new watering-hole for the district featuring a micro-brewery, bar, restaurant and bottle shop. Expected to open Mid-2024.
Tonsley Village is proud to be part of the Tonsley Innovation District with leading-edge research and education institutions, established businesses, start-ups and more.
We hung out at Three Little Pods café to meet some of the locals who enjoy spending time at Tonsley.

I love the general atmosphere here at Tonsley, and its unique mix of green gardens, technology and office space. You can see people playing basketball, students wandering around and business people having meetings all within the same area. With new pods popping up in the MAB, buildings being constructed and new businesses moving in, it’s always a hive of activity.

User Researcher, Global Centre for Modern Ageing
I work at the Global Centre for Modern Ageing (GCMA) and my role is a user researcher. What I do is investigate how people interact with products and services, particularly how older people interact. Ultimately, we try and figure out how to make it easier for people to live and age at home. We’re particularly interested in technology, sensors, telehealth and many more innovative topics that are coming through now.
James
Development Manager, Squash SA
Here at the Tonsley Innovation District we’ve been able to expose the sport to people that wouldn’t normally see a squash court. We wanted to take away all the hurdles and allow everyone to access the court. That’s why the court is out in the open with 24/7 access and priced pretty well to encourage anyone to play. We even have free racquets and balls so you can simply turn up, book the court on your phone, pay and play.
Simon Burton
Student
I’m in my final year of electronics engineering at Flinders Uni. I’ve got a few units remaining before I complete my degree, and I’ve been coming here since 2015. The facilities and the technology they use to educate here is state-of-the-art. The computer facilities in particular, especially the labs dedicated to special tasks in the industry like automation and learning about embedded development, and using microchip boards where you learn to program in assembly code. I also feel like this course has taught me how to work effectively as a specialist in a professional way.
MADDALINE MARCHANT
Apprentice Carpenter
I have always loved construction and remember at school heading with a friend to a local shopping centre to watch a nearby building being constructed. I was just so interested in the construction and how it all came together. Today I am part of that construction process, as an apprentice carpenter with Melisi Projects, working at Tonsley Village. I just love it, I’ve been building three-storey apartments and houses, doing framing and cladding and second fit outs. When you stand back and look at what you’ve achieved over a day, it’s great.
Brett Adams
Tafe Lecturer
I’m a lecturer in the electrical department at TAFE SA, teaching certificate III apprentices and certificate II career pathways. It’s been really exciting to witness the development and growth of the precinct, from education and industry arrivals like Flinders Uni, SAGE Automation, ZEN Energy, Siemens, etc, to today where we have the residential and hospitality industries coming on board. There’s definitely more of a vibe here now. I really like seeing people taking advantage of the sports available like basketball, table tennis and squash, along with enjoying the green spaces for lunch and a chat.
DR SHERRY RANDHAWA
Engineering Lecturer
I grew up amidst the steel-and-glass skyscrapers of bustling metro-politan Singapore, but there's only one place I want to work and live now: Tonsley Village. I'm used to having tall buildings all around me. Tonsley has that big city feel, and yet it doesn't feel so crowded. There's a beautiful garden in the main assembly area that lets the weather come in. You can sit there and eat your sandwich, and you just feel so alive and refreshed.
KALIF AUDITORE & NICK BONICIOLL
Co-founders of a funding platform
We are based in the New Venture Institute at Flinders Uni which is headed by Matt Salier, who is a genius. He is so passionate and he’s a visionary. We feel very lucky to be able to learn from him and be surrounded by so many talented, entrepreneurial people here. We love it here. It is one of the few university’s with a venture arm, which really helps start-ups to succeed because you can connect with the right people. There’s so much potential and creativity here, we hope to show investors globally what SA entrepreneurs in particular can do.
VEERA MUSTONEN
Executive Director, LifeLab
I'm from Helsinki Finland and have been here for one month and three weeks for work. I work at the LifeLab, which is part of the Global Centre for Modern Ageing. I really love our lab here. I love the view of the Central Forest. I really like the presence of so many different companies and the university, the researchers, the kids playing basketball and the people roaming around who come to visit us. It's always lively. I like the idea of transforming urban places into something new and having the layers of history present also.
